The Medical Reimbursement program is designed to prepare students to utilize medical office software programs to input data related to reimbursement and billing. The program focuses on the importance of compliance with state and federal regulations. The program also emphasizes the accuracy and knowledge of medical terminology, diseases, and home care and skilled nursing facility reimbursement process/system. The Foundations of Intercultural Communication is incorporated in the program to expand their knowledge in understanding communication across cultures.

The Associate in Science in Medical Reimbursement prepares students for employment in healthcare businesses such as hospitals, physician offices, clinics, skilled nursing facilities and insurance companies.  Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to

  • Read and interpret patients’ medical records of patients
  • Submit insurance claims including deductible amounts and patient’s responsibility
  • Complete and electronically transmit insurance claim forms
  • Assign diagnostic and procedural codes according to ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM/PCS, and CPT coding systems using federal coding compliance guidelines
  • Review coding forms for accuracy
  • Use manual and computerized encoders and groupers systems to determine Diagnosis-Related Groups, Resource Based Relative Value Scale, and Ambulatory Payment Classification.
  • Post charge payments and write-offs on patient visits
